From shin splints and bruises to fractured bones and torn ligaments, in sports, injuries are inevitable. The primary goal of an athlete is to know how to protect themselves from having such injuries occur.
Most sports have equipment that athletes can wear to protect themselves. Baseball players wear cups to protect their crown jewels. Football players wear pads to make sure they don't bruise their fragile bodies. Soccer players wear shin guards to prevent being hurt by a kick. Last but not least, Ruggers get the privilege of wearing a cap if they choose to do so. Rugby truly is a gentlemen's game played by hooligans. With no equipment to prevent them from being hit, rugby players must be tough.
Unfortunately for ruggers, just being tough will not prevent injuries. Rugby is a high collision sport and concussions, cuts, bruises, strains, etc. will occur. How do ruggers prevent injuries then?
The key to preventing injuries comes from proper training. At practice as well as on the pitch a rugger must always use proper technique. Although practicing fundamentals may not be fun for ruggers, practicing proper tackling, scrumming, and rucking is key. Coaches need to develop their players, and make sure that they know their position during the game. Each player on the field should know their abilities, for instance, your prop should not be out on the wing in the back line. Knowing the rules of the game is very important to ruggers.
KNOW YOUR POSITION! The positions on the pitch include your backs and forwards. There are eight forwards and seven backs on the field. Forwards consist of your props, hooker, locks, flankers, and eight man. Backs consist of your scrum half, fly half, inside center, outside center, wings, and fullback. Typically your forwards will rely on their size and strength and backs will rely on their speed and agility.
Keeping your body fit is significant to preventing injuries. Strength, speed, and skill training is very valuable to ruggers. While training an athlete needs to make sure to properly stretch and warm up. Proper nutrition can also help when keeping your body fit. Don't put added stresses on injuries, if you are injured take a break from training and focus your time on other aspects of the game.
Using equipment such as scrum machines and tackling pads are very useful in preventing injuries. For forwards knowing how to scrum is one of the key aspects to the game. By using a scrum machine the forwards can engage without injuring a teammate. Tackling pads can be used by both forwards and backs to learn proper technique. A RUGBY TACKLE IS NOTHING LIKE A FOOTBALL TACKLE!!! You cannot stress this point enough to ruggers. Make sure your players learn to wrap up when they tackle.
Keep a level head when playing. Make sure you know proper techniques. Stay in your position. Prevent injuries for ruggers!
